The answer to this mystery may be etched in sandstone - if you know where to look. In Petroglyph, we see glimpses of the Fremont Indians who thrived in central Utah some 800 years ago, then suddenly disappeared, but not before leaving clues on canyon walls. Sevier County Sheriff Ike Johnson must make sense of them and uncover what mutilated cattle, blue balls of light in the sky, shapeshifters and skinwalkers - and an Indian's body in traditional clothing - all have in common.

One man could put all the pieces together and provide an answer Jack Redd, a former Special Forces sniper. But, he is lost somewhere in the 13th century, and the sheriff is determined to find him. Two eclipses, one in 1257 a.d. and another two years later, are key to solving the mystery and getting Jack Redd back to his own time and to the peope he loves. It's a fun ride!

Having grown up and lived in the central/south central Utah area, I was excited to read an account of the Native Americans who lived in the area some 1,000 years ago. I am sure that Mr. Jarrard spent many many hours in research and study of the culture and traditions of those people. His story relates a probable answer to what happened to them when they disappeared in the thirteenth century. More than that, however, he spins a tale courage and rugged self reliance that mirrors those whom I know that live in that part of Utah and who love and respect the Native people who once were living in same hills where they now have their homes and farms. The characters are real and believable and their actions reflect the values that somehow has been lost in the 21st century. It was a really great read.

If you love stories about time travel like I do, this novel is for you. It's an elaborate, finely woven, well researched, and well presented mystery that takes the reader back to the American West of the thirteenth century. It's a fascinating and authentic portrayal of Native American tribal life and culture and the fight for survival in that century. The characters from both the 21st and 13th centuries are very believable and endearing and after the first half, in which the author sets up the mystery and main protagonists, becomes a page-turner you cannot put down. This story will stay with you for a long time.
Petroglyph is an intricate story that melds the ancient life of pit houses and animal skin clothes with the modern world of iPads and GPS systems. This well-researched novel gives an intimate view of what ancient life was like for the Freemont Indians in Utah through the eyes of 21st century characters. When Jack Redd suddenly finds himself in the 13th century and a dead Freemont Indian mysteriously appears in his place, sheriff Ike Johnson embarks on a suspenseful, and sometimes dangerous journey in solving the mystery. Author G.M. Jarrard keeps readers guessing until the last page through battles, murders, romances and even a little humor. Petroglyph was a great read, and was one I'd especially recommend to young teenage boys.
PETROGLYPH is an interesting mixture of history and suspense as author G.M. Jarrard deftly weaves Native American lore with mysterious events in Central Utah. As the story moves between different time eras, alternating the puzzle of the strange disappearance of the Fremont Indians and several unusual occurrences in modern-times, readers will become entranced with plights of two characters, Ike Johnson and Jack Redd, and how their parallel paths will cross the boundaries of time.
